What If You Knew - NM
Supporting the Health Security for New Mexicans Campaign
63% of all bankruptcies in the US are due to health care
expenses!
  • In 2000 only 49.3% of all bankruptcies were due to health care expenses!

75% of the people who had health care related bankruptcies
had health insurance!

How can these statements be true?
  • If you get sick enough or injured badly enough that you cannot work, your
employer is only required to continue your insurance, if it was employer provided,
    for six months.
  • You can purchase an extension of your insurance under the COBRE plan, if you
can afford to make the payments.  That too is time limited.
  • At some point you cannot continue coverage because you got sick or were
severely injured because insurance policies have annual and/or lifetime maximums.
  • If you do get well and go back to work your insurance will never again cover
anything related to your previous injury or illness.
  • Many illnesses are not covered by health insurance unless you have a very
    expensive plan.

Health Insurance companies work for a profit.
  • 20 to 30% profit on a $20,000 car or on a $300 camera is expected.
  • 34% profit on an health insurance policy that costs $16,000 per year seems
    unreasonable.
  • Health insurance companies providing their CEOs salaries of $9,844,212 to
$24,300,112 seem unreasonable and are part of why we must stop using
    health insurance companies.
Single-Payer
A single entity, usually a government agency, is responsible for distributing all payments for medical
care and medical supplies within a country.
Single-Payer offers a serious cost advantage because the system operates to sustain itself and serve
its clients and has no other function.

Public Option
This is a government agency that operates similarly to an insurance company.  People would be able
to choose to buy insurance from a private corporation or from a government public plan.
Hypothetically this agency could save money over insurance companies.  Even though this would be a
government plan the probability of significant cost savings is not good because this plan would be
devised to compete directly and equally with insurance companies.  Savings will not come until the
system is changed.

Co-Op
A not-for profit organization or possibly a government agency that serves to offer insurance policies
from any company that has registered to sell in the area that you live.
There is no method of cost containment in this type of system.  The larger insurance corporation will do
much better under this system.  You will benefit because you will be able to buy insurance - if you have
enough money.

Status Quo
Keeping things the way they are.  Make no changes.
Insurance premiums have been going up every year for many years and our income has not been
going up!  Insurance companies in New Mexico just announced that they are going to be raising their
rates 10%.  If nothing changes by the year 2025 the average insurance premium will equal the average
income.  See why doing nothing is unacceptable!
